Era hermano de Osiris, a quien asesinó, y antagonista de Horus, el hijo de Isis, su hermana. El culto a Set se extinguió durante el primer milenio BC, y el dios desapareció gradualmente del panteón egipcio. Más tarde, se le consideró esencialmente maligno y se lo identificó como un dios de los persas y otros invasores de Egipto.
